A farmer, Kabiru Kamba, has been hailed a hero after rescuing a newborn baby girl who was found buried alive in his farmland in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Kamba recounted the miraculous rescue while receiving a delegation from the Kebbi State Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence, led by former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Rafa’atu Hammani.
Speaking on the incident, which occurred last Friday, Kamba said he discovered an unusual ridge among the regular ones while working on his farm.
“Out of curiosity, I flagged down some passing motorcyclists to help dig,” he said. “We found a wrapper buried in the soil, which raised my suspicion. I immediately informed the police at a nearby checkpoint. They arrived, dug further, and discovered a baby girl — miraculously alive and crying, wrapped in a piece of textile.”
Moved by compassion, Kamba offered to care for the abandoned child. He said the Dandi Local Government Council formally handed the baby over to him, pending the outcome of police investigations.
“In such situations, it is only normal to help,” he said. “I didn’t expect anything in return; it’s simply a humanitarian act. Coincidentally, my wife had just given birth, so breastfeeding the baby has not been a challenge. We have already planned her naming ceremony for Wednesday. I’ve bought a ram and other items for the occasion.”
Kamba’s wife also expressed joy at welcoming the baby into their family. “I felt perfectly fine and happy when my husband told me. I will take care of her just as I would my own child,” she said.
Hajiya Hammani assured the family that the TWG’s observations would be reported to the Wife of the State Governor, Hajiya Zainab-Nasare Idris, for further action. She praised the family’s compassion and expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for sparing the baby’s life.
Alhaji Nasiru Idris, Secretary of the TWG, stated that the visit was to show solidarity, offer prayers, and commend the farmer’s brave actions. He also lauded the Nigeria Police for their prompt response and ongoing investigation into the shocking incident.
The TWG donated essential items to support the baby’s care, including baby clothes, soap, diapers, powdered milk, a mattress, a baby bed, a mosquito net, and detergents.
Police investigations to identify and apprehend the perpetrators are ongoing.
