Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has revealed that he rejected an appointment offer from President Bola Tinubu, saying he preferred to focus on his personal life after decades of public service.
Fayose, a two-term governor and stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the revelation on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, on Wednesday.
Despite his long-standing friendship with President Tinubu, Fayose said his decision was rooted in principle, not partisanship.
“Have you seen me taking an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir,’” Fayose said.
“At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible, doing other things that I need to do. I’ve served well — two-time governor, I’ve done well. Tomorrow will hold itself.”
The former governor clarified that although he has maintained a cordial relationship with Tinubu over the years, that personal connection does not translate into political alignment.
“I’ve not been with APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth,” he added.
‘Only Obi Has Traction to Challenge APC’
On the political outlook ahead of the 2027 general elections, Fayose offered a frank assessment of the opposition, asserting that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, remains the only politician with sufficient national appeal to challenge the ruling APC.
“Tell me who would defeat APC? The only opposition that I know in Nigeria — I am not saying he will win Asiwaju — but the only person that has traction is Obi,” Fayose said.
“Despite not being in government, he is the only one talking and everywhere. I give it to him.”
He added that while he continues to critique government actions where necessary, his political choices are guided by conviction rather than personal gain.
“I criticise where necessary, but my politics is guided by principle, not by what I stand to gain,” Fayose declared.
Fayose declined to compare Obi’s opposition strength to those of former President Goodluck Jonathan or ex-Minister Rotimi Amaechi, maintaining that his remarks were based solely on current realities
