The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed the screening of aspirants for its 2025 Elective National Convention, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, attributed the postponement to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Fintiri said a new date would be announced soon, assuring aspirants and party members of the committee’s commitment to delivering a credible and transparent convention process.
“A new date will be communicated once fixed. The NCOC regrets any inconvenience caused by the postponement. All aspirants and members of our party should note the foregoing and be guided accordingly,” — Ahmadu Fintiri, NCOC Chairman
The party’s national convention, where new national officers will emerge, is scheduled to hold between November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Last week, the PDP had named a 13-member National Convention Screening Committee chaired by Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, to vet aspirants vying for national offices ahead of the convention.
Leadership Contest Deepens
The postponement comes amid growing internal tension following the declaration of former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, to contest for the position of National Chairman.
Lamido’s announcement came just days after northern PDP stakeholders endorsed former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, as their consensus candidate for the top position.
However, the endorsement has sparked divisions within the party, with factions loyal to Lamido and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, rejecting Turaki’s emergence. They argue that the process lacked adequate consultation and transparency.
The renewed contest for control of the party’s national leadership comes at a time when the PDP is battling internal disunity and high-profile resignations across several state chapters.
The PDP’s elective national convention is a crucial event in the party’s rebuilding process as it seeks to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party insiders say the leadership tussle could shape the PDP’s future direction and determine whether it can effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next poll.
Observers believe the outcome of the convention — and the eventual leadership line-up — will be a litmus test for the opposition’s ability to rally its fractured ranks and present a united front.
