Remains of late former President to arrive Katsina by noon, interment set for 2pm

KATSINA, NIGERIA — Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, has announced that the burial of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, will take place on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, in Daura, his hometown in Katsina State.
Speaking to journalists at the Government House in Katsina on Monday, Governor Radda confirmed that the body of the late leader, who died on Sunday in a London hospital aged 82, will arrive in Katsina at approximately 12 noon. The Janazah (Islamic burial) is scheduled for 2pm in Daura, the headquarters of Daura Local Government Area.
Governor Radda expressed the collective grief of the people of Katsina and extended condolences to the entire nation and President Bola Tinubu.
“In consultation with the family and close associates in London, we have finalised arrangements for the burial,” Radda stated. “The body will arrive in Katsina tomorrow by noon, and the burial will take place in Daura at about 2pm.”
“On behalf of myself, the government, and the people of Katsina State, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President, and to the people of Nigeria—especially to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. May Almighty Allah grant us the strength to bear this great loss.”
The state government has begun preparations to ensure a smooth and dignified burial in line with Islamic rites and national protocols.
Buhari’s Passing
Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away on Sunday afternoon in a hospital in London, United Kingdom, following a long period of illness. His death has drawn an outpouring of grief from across the political and diplomatic spectrum, with tributes pouring in from within Nigeria and beyond.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to accompany the remains of the former president back to Nigeria. Flags across the country are being flown at half-mast for seven days in his honour, and a special Federal Executive Council meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday.
The burial will mark the final journey of a leader whose influence on Nigeria’s military and democratic history spanned decades—from his time as Head of State in the 1980s to his return as a democratically elected president in 2015.
National Tribute
Security has been heightened in and around Daura, with dignitaries, traditional rulers, and senior government officials expected to attend the ceremony.
Full state honours will be accorded, following President Tinubu’s directive, while the Federal Government continues to plan a broader national tribute to Buhari’s life and legacy in the coming days.
As the nation prepares to bid farewell to one of its most consequential leaders, the people of Katsina—his home state—will host the final rites.
