The lingering political tension in Rivers State may be heading towards a compromise following a late-night reconciliation meeting convened by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Sources familiar with the development disclosed that the meeting brought together the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and other influential political stakeholders from the oil-rich state. Although official details of the deliberations were not made public, the high-level engagement is widely viewed as a strategic move to restore stability within Rivers’ political landscape.
According to reports by The Nation, Governor Fubara was later seen accompanying Wike to his residence in Guzape, Abuja, after the meeting. Sources quoted by the newspaper alleged that the governor expressed remorse over the strained relationship between the two leaders and reportedly pledged to maintain respect for the former Rivers governor, signalling a possible thaw in their prolonged political standoff.
The political crisis in Rivers State has dominated national discourse since late 2023, following a breakdown in the relationship between Wike and his successor, Fubara. The dispute triggered a deep division within the Rivers State House of Assembly, leading to factionalisation among lawmakers and raising concerns over governance stability in the state.
The conflict escalated into a series of political confrontations, including impeachment threats, protests by supporters of both camps, and heightened security tensions across parts of the state. The development prompted interventions from political leaders, elder statesmen, and traditional rulers who repeatedly called for reconciliation to safeguard democratic governance and economic activities in the state.

However, critical observers link Tinubu’s peace moves to be a part of his chest cards to boost his fortune in the state in the 2027 elections, given the strategic importance of the state in the South-south.
